How to Prevent Clutter Hot Spots

“Nothing to it, but to do it!”

Your clutter hot spots can be any flat surface or space where things tend to collect and create chaos in your home. Typical hot spots are usually counters, tables, chairs (or treadmills), and any drop zone when you enter your home. Follow these steps to prevent clutter hot spots.

Start by clearing the space

  • Pick up each & every item

  • Determine if it’s trash or something you want to keep

  • Ask yourself, “If I needed this, where would I look for it?”

  • Put it in it’s new (or old) home

Set out a tray or decorative basket for things you would look for in this space

  • Important papers

  • Keys

  • Wallet

  • Unworn clothes

Practice putting things away in their new home

Take 5 minutes every night to put things away & clear the space. Consistency builds habits.

If you get overwhelmed or if the whole room is full of clutter use the Clockwise Rule

Clockwise Rule: Start in one corner of the room and move clockwise putting things away.

  • Don’t worry about making multiple trips to different rooms.

  • Focus on one thing at a time.

  • Less thinking & more doing.
